Rewiring your house may be very beneficial for people who live in older houses. The way we use appliances within our houses has changed so much in the last 50 years that some older houses are not wired to handle all the devices and appliances we have running.
- Your house was built prior to 1960
- You still have two prong outlets
- Your wiring has an outer jacket made of cotton
- Your house has BX wiring
- Your house has aluminum wiring for your outlet receptacles

BX wiring was used commonly throughout 1940-1960 construction and is wiring with a spiral pattern metal jacket. BX wiring used rubber insultation which disintegrates and can cause issues. It is not common in older homes, but we have seen it in some.
Aluminum wiring has been known to fail at the connection and can splice when installed incorrectly. Most issues occur when someone installs a copper only switch or outlet instead of an ALR device. In extreme situations, this can lead to fires.
If you have an older home, it is all about safety. The wiring of the past isn’t up to the standards of electrical wiring today. If you are older or have young children, the safest choice is to have an electrician look at your wiring and rewire your house if it needs it.
