Common Plumbing Problems

General Plumbing Problems

Why is my drain is clogged?

Slow draining bathroom sinks, bath drains, and shower drains generally get blocked up by clogs of hair, soap, or other debris. Clearing the blockage may require the use of a plunger or a plumber's snake if the problem has moved deep into your plumbing. The problem will usually get worse over time, if not dealt with or maintained on a regular basis.

How do I know if I have leaky pipes?

Leaky pipes can be more than just a nuisance, they can cause damage to furniture and floors, and the dampness can encourage bugs like cockroaches. Leaks commonly happen at the pipe joints but can also occur anywhere along the pipe. Leaks are more common in the winter when water can freeze, expand, and cause pipes to burst. To know if you have a leaky pipe, you may notice bubbling in your walls or ceiling, pools of water in your home, or dripping from your ceiling. For more hidden leaks, you should call Marines Plumbing for a plumbing inspection.

Why do I have puddles of water in my yard?

If you see puddles of water in your yard or your yard smells like sewage, you might have a serious issue that needs immediate attention. The cause of this could be broken water lines or sewer lines. This can cause serious damage to the home and loss of property if a sewer backs up into the home. Marines Plumbing can perform camera inspection to verify any problem areas in the main sewer line and we are fully equipped with all necessary tools to help you fix this.

Why is my faucet pressure low?

If your water trickles out of the tap rather than gushes, this may be a symptom of low water pressure. This is often a problem in older homes. Low water pressure can be caused by a number of issues, a common one being leaking pipes that have become broken, worn, or corroded over time. If it's low water pressure in a shower that's the issue, it’s usually caused by a build-up of sediment and mineral deposits on aerators. If it's the shower that's the problem, then you need to inspect the problem or have Marines Plumbing come out and either repair it or replace it.

Why is my faucet dripping?

Dripping faucets are so common that it's rare to find someone who hasn't experienced this issue. It's not just a source of irritation; the waste of water can push up your water bill and cost you money. A single faucet can drip away hundreds of gallons over the course of a year. The cause of dripping faucets in many cases is an internal washer that has become
stiff, torn, worn, or dislodged over time. Other common culprits are wear, incoming pressure being too high, and tear or age of the faucet.

Toilet Related Plumbing Problems

Why doesn’t my toilet flush all the way?

If your toilet isn't flushing all the way, it's most likely because of one of these problems: clog in the toilet, scale build up in the jets of your toilet, the water level in your toilet tank is set too low, problems with your flapper, or clog in your drain.

Why is my toilet leaking from the bottom?

A common reason for a toilet leak from the base is a loose connection where the tank meets the toilet. Make sure to check the connecting bolts. If they seem loose or you can see water gathering in that area, use the screwdriver to tighten them. Another common reason your toilet is leaking from the bottom is because there might be a bad wax seal. If you need help with this, please call Marines Plumbing.

Why is my toilet wobbly or unbalanced?

A wobbly toilet happens when they aren't held securely to the floor, and if you let the wobble persist, they can leak and give you more serious problems. More often than not, the wobble is caused by loose toilet bolts, but the flange may also be responsible. It may be corroded, broken or set too high. Marines Plumbing can figure out the root cause.

Why is my toilet running?

A running toilet can be costly; more than 200 gallons of water can be lost each day from a single running toilet. The most common problem is a faulty flapper valve which controls the water that passes from the tank to the bowl. This is a fairly straightforward fix with a toilet repair kit available at any hardware store. Another reason could be caused by sediment
affecting the flushing and filling. If your water bills seem high, check for silent leaks by putting some food coloring in the upper tank and see if it makes its way to the bowl without flushing.

Why is my toilet clogged?

When the toilet bowl fills up and doesn't drain away, you've got a clog. The blockage is normally caused by a mixture of paper and human waste. Clogged toilets can normally be fixed with a plunger. If that doesn't work, then a sewer snake or drain auger can be used to loosen up the blockage. If all else fails, call Marines Plumbing to clear the clog. Click to learn more.

Kitchen Related Plumbing Problems

Why is my dishwasher not draining water?

It is quite common for a dishwasher to not drain because of a clog - either with the drain hose or the air gap (if the unit has one). Drain hose clogs commonly occur where the hose is attached to the main household drain line, or where the hose connects with the garbage disposer.

Why isn’t my garbage disposal turning?

Garbage disposals are very useful appliances, but they do jam
sometimes. Running them without water, disposing certain food substances such as cornhusks and potato peels, or allowing silverware to get inside can all cause problems. If your garbage disposal is turned on but not spinning, you can attempt to repair the jam or call Marines Plumbing to fix the problem. It’s not worth losing a finger over!

Why isn’t my garbage disposal turning on?

If your garbage disposal just won't turn at all, then it's very likely that the disposal has lost power. Your unit may have blown a circuit, or it could be unplugged. First, check the plug for your garbage disposal to ensure that it's secure. Next, locate the reset button on the underside of the unit, and
push it. If it is still not working, call Marines Plumbing to troubleshoot the issue.
